A team of researchers from the Prussian Foundation for Cultural Heritage and the Berlin Museum of Prehistory and Early History has conducted extensive research into the origins of human remains stored in German museums. The investigation revealed that the vast majority of the skeletal material originated from African nations that were under German colonial occupation during the 19th and 20th centuries. Researchers collaborated with scholars from Togo and other West African nations to map the provenance of the skulls. The foundation's findings represent a significant step toward repatriating these historical artifacts to their countries of origin.
